23 Days of Art, Music, Literature and Film

Estuary 2021 is the second edition of the large-scale arts festival that celebrates the lives, landscapes and histories of the spectacular Thames Estuary.

Taking place on the river itself, and along the 83 miles of South Essex and North Kent coastline, contemporary artworks, discussion and events explore and respond to powerful themes resonant to the estuary.

Artworks set in the landscape, online and within Covid-safe venues, explore the estuary through the lens of contemporary concerns, including climate justice, protest and rebellion, imperial legacy and the rich, often overlooked stories of its diverse communities, bringing new audiences to a deeper understanding of the estuary.

Estuary 2021 is led by a partnership between estuary-based arts organisations, Metal (South Essex) and Cement Fields (North Kent).

Essex Writers House and Essex Book Festival are delighted to be partnering with Estuary 2021 on the following projects and events.

Tom King Thames Estuary Trail: a walk round the end of the world

Tom King is the Essex Book Festival 2021 Writer-in-Residence in the Essex Writers House. The second edition of his book, released at the end of May includes a new introduction and additional chapters that extend and update the walk to create 107 miles of estuary landscape and adventures to discover.

Tom will be leading walks and talks around his adventures so be sure to check out more information at www.estuaryfestival.com

Sutton Manor: New Writing on a Hidden History

Sutton Manor is one of the oldest houses in Southend. It sits, just out of
reach behind a perimeter fence for the MOD and little is known about this architectural gem. Estuary 2021 in partnership with Essex Book Festival, has commissioned four contemporary writers, Amina Atiq, Season Butler, Alison Moore and Martha Pailing to create new work in response to this intriguing estuary site and history.
