The Silver Darlings are the first and only, all-female, sea shanty crew in Essex. Possibly the world.
The Darling crew, press-ganged into action in 2016, consists of: Captain (Laura), Viking (Emily), Grace (Alison), Shiver Me Timbers (Siobhan), Baby (Rose) and their newest recruit, Dutch Courage (Kate).
Hailing from Southend, a town steeped in the fishing and cockling industries, they are naturally drawn to sea shanties, the sailors’ working songs, telling the stories of our culture and heritage. The Silver Darlings are passionately committed to ensuring that these songs remain in the public domain and are not lost at sea.
They have performed at many local festivals: Leigh Regatta, Leigh Folk Festival, Leigh Folk Carol service, and are setting sail in 2019 for distant shores and new horizons.
This event is part of Essex Book Festival’s Secret Water weekend in various venues in Harwich. The Silver Darlings will be performing at the Redoubt at 12.30 – 1.15pm, and on LV18 at Harwich Dock at 2.15 – 3.00pm.
